The Complete Guide to Bakelite Lamp Holders: Types, Sizes & How to Fit

Looking for a Bakelite lamp holder that suits a vintage pendant and wires up without fuss? This guide explains what Bakelite holders are, how they compare with plastic and metal, how to choose between E27 and E14, and which holders in our Bakelite Holders collection suit kitchens, dining tables and DIY pendant builds. Every holder below comes with free UK standard delivery on orders over £30 and 30-day returns.

Quick answer: a Bakelite lamp holder is a heat-resistant, electrically insulating socket that screws onto the end of a pendant cable and takes an E27 (standard Edison screw) or E14 (small Edison screw) bulb. For most pendant lights choose E27 with a cord grip. Add a shade ring if you want to fit a lampshade, and choose E14 only when your bulb or shade is the small candle type.

What is a Bakelite lamp holder?

A Bakelite lamp holder is the socket that holds a light bulb at the end of a pendant cable. Bakelite itself is an early thermosetting plastic developed by the Belgian-American chemist Leo Baekeland in the early 1900s. Once it has set it does not soften or melt with heat, and it does not conduct electricity, which made it the natural choice for switches, sockets and lamp holders for much of the twentieth century.

That heritage is why a Bakelite lamp holder still looks right on a vintage or industrial pendant. The glossy black or crisp white cap, the simple screw thread and the plain cord entry are exactly what you see in old workshops, cafes and period homes. A modern holder in the same style gives you that look with current ratings and an easy fit. Some holders in our Bakelite Holders collection are made from heat-resistant Bakelite, while others use a metal and heat-resistant plastic construction in the same classic shape. Each product page states the material, so you always know what you are buying.

Most holders here are E27 screw types, with a smaller selection in E14. They suit DIY pendant builds, replacement jobs on older lights, cafe and restaurant lighting, and any project where you are pairing a fabric cable with a bare filament bulb or a lampshade.

Bakelite vs plastic vs metal lamp holders: which is better?

There is no single best material. The right choice depends on the look you want, the shade you are using and how the fitting is earthed. This table compares the three common types.

Material Look and feel Heat and insulation Best for
Bakelite Glossy, rigid, classic black or white Heat resistant and a natural electrical insulator Vintage pendants, period homes, cafes
Heat-resistant plastic Lighter, very similar shape and finish Insulating and designed for lamp use Budget builds, multi-light installs, trade jobs
Metal Industrial, brushed or brass finish Conducts electricity, so it needs correct earthing Industrial and loft styles

If you want a metal holder for an industrial look, browse our metal lamp holders. Bear in mind that metal holders and metal shades need correct earthing, which usually means a three-core cable, so check your wiring before you choose. If you are not sure, a qualified electrician can confirm what your fitting needs.

What is an E27 bulb, and should you choose E27 or E14?

E27 is the Edison Screw fitting with a 27 mm diameter thread. It is the standard large screw base used by most vintage filament bulbs, globe bulbs and many LED bulbs, and it is by far the most common choice for pendant lights. E14 is the Small Edison Screw, with a 14 mm thread, used for candle bulbs, small lantern bulbs and compact fittings.

Choose E27 if you want the widest range of bulbs and the classic pendant look. Choose E14 if your shade or bulb is specifically E14, or you want a slimmer, more delicate fitting. The thread has to match the bulb, so check the base before you order. You can browse matching E27 bulbs and E14 candle bulbs to be sure everything pairs up.

How to choose the right Bakelite lamp holder: a buying guide

Six checks will get you the right holder first time.

  1. Thread size. Match the holder to your bulb: E27 for standard screw bulbs, E14 for small candle bulbs. The collection can be filtered by E27 and E14.
  2. Cord grip or plain. A cord grip clamps the cable where it enters the holder, so the weight of a hanging fitting does not pull on the terminals. For any pendant, choose a holder with a cord grip. Plain holders suit lamps and fittings where the cable is secured elsewhere.
  3. Shade ring. This is the threaded ring that clamps a glass or metal shade around the bulb. If you plan to use a shade, pick a holder with a ring and browse our retro lampshades. For a bare bulb you do not need one.
  4. Colour. Black is the classic choice for vintage and industrial schemes. White blends into white ceilings and suits lighter, more modern rooms. You can filter the collection by black or white.
  5. Rating and wattage. Check the voltage, current and wattage on each product page. For example, the black E27 holder with shade ring lists a 60W maximum, while the vintage holder lists a 10A rating. Match the holder to your bulb. LED bulbs draw far less power than old incandescent bulbs, so they sit comfortably inside these ratings.
  6. Pack size. Single holders suit one pendant. Packs of 5 or 10 suit multi-light builds, cafes and trade work, and cut the cost per holder.

Which Bakelite holders are best for kitchens and living rooms?

For a kitchen, choose a black E27 holder with a cord grip and pair it with a metal or glass shade. That combination is easy to wipe, looks good over an island or dining table, and keeps the cable weight off the terminals. Hang pendants roughly 75 to 90 cm above the table surface, and keep fittings clear of direct splashes from hobs and sinks. Warm white filament or LED bulbs give a welcoming glow. Our kitchen lighting collection shows complete ideas to build around.

For a living room, think in clusters. Three holders on cables of different lengths make a feature over a side table or stairwell, and white holders disappear neatly against white ceilings. If you want to dim the light, choose dimmable LED bulbs and a compatible dimmer, because a standard bulb will flicker or fail on a dimmer circuit. For more inspiration browse living and dining room lighting and our full range of pendant lights.

Where can I buy cheap Bakelite lamp holders in the UK?

Buying in multipacks lowers the cost per holder. The 5-pack E27 holders start at £5.39, which works out at about £1.08 per holder, and the 10-pack of black E27 holders is listed at £29.59. Single holders start from £1.49. Cheapest is not always best, so check the cord grip, the rating and the material on the product page before you buy.

UK standard delivery is free on orders over £30 and £2.69 below that, with next day delivery available for £4.69 if you order by 1pm. We estimate 1 to 3 days for UK orders, and you have 30 days to return an unused item. If you buy regularly for installs or resale, see our trade and B2B page.

How to fit a Bakelite lamp holder (step by step)

A like-for-like holder swap is a common DIY job, but it involves mains wiring. If you are not confident, or the fitting is hard-wired to a ceiling, ask a qualified electrician to fit or check it. Our product installation guide has more detail on fitting our lighting.

  1. Isolate the power. Switch the circuit off at the consumer unit, not just at the wall switch, and confirm it is dead with a proper tester.
  2. Take the holder apart. Unscrew the cap and cord grip so you have the base, the cap and the cord grip separate. If you are fitting a shade ring, slide it on now.
  3. Thread the cable. Pass the cable through the cap and cord grip, leaving enough length to strip and connect.
  4. Strip and connect. Strip the outer sheath and about 8 to 10 mm of insulation from each conductor. Connect them to the screw terminals as the instructions show. Where the fitting needs an earth, use a three-core cable and connect it correctly.
  5. Secure the cable. Tighten the cord grip so the cable is held firmly and the terminals take no strain, then screw the cap onto the base.
  6. Fit the shade and bulb. Add the lampshade, screw in the bulb, restore the power and test.

Choose a cable that suits the job. Our 2 core round fabric cable suits double-insulated fittings, while 3 core round cable includes an earth for metal shades and cages. A matching ceiling rose finishes the ceiling end.

Why is my Bakelite lamp holder not working?

Switch the power off at the consumer unit before you check anything. Most faults come down to one of these causes.

  • The bulb is loose or blown. Tighten it gently and try a bulb you know works.
  • Wrong bulb base. An E14 bulb will not seat properly in an E27 holder. Check the base on both.
  • A loose terminal. If a conductor has worked loose or was not stripped far enough, the circuit will not complete. Reconnect it firmly.
  • A flattened centre contact. The small contact at the bottom of the holder can be pressed flat over time and stop touching the bulb. A new holder is the safe fix.
  • A tripped breaker or a faulty switch. Check the circuit on the consumer unit and test the switch.
  • Flickering on a dimmer. Use a dimmable bulb with a compatible dimmer.

If you notice a burning smell, scorch marks or discolouration on a holder, stop using it, switch the circuit off and call an electrician. Replacing a damaged holder is far cheaper than repairing the damage it can cause.

What else do you need for your pendant light?

A holder is one part of a pendant. These collections complete the build:

Bakelite lamp holder FAQs

What is a Bakelite lamp holder?

A Bakelite lamp holder is a heat-resistant, insulating socket that holds a bulb at the end of a pendant cable. It screws onto an E27 or E14 bulb and connects to the cable through screw terminals. The classic black or white finish suits vintage and industrial lighting.

Is Bakelite safe for light fittings?

Yes, when the holder is used within its rated voltage and wattage and is wired correctly. Bakelite resists heat and does not conduct electricity. Check the rating on the product page, match it to your bulb, and ask a qualified electrician if you are unsure about the wiring.

Should I choose an E27 or E14 lamp holder?

Choose E27 for most pendant lights because it takes the widest range of filament, globe and LED bulbs. Choose E14 only if your bulb or shade is a small candle type. The thread must match the bulb.

Do I need a cord grip on a pendant lamp holder?

For hanging fittings, yes. A cord grip clamps the cable so the weight of the fitting does not pull on the terminals. Plain holders are fine where the cable is secured elsewhere.

What does a shade ring do on a lamp holder?

A shade ring is a threaded ring that clamps a glass or metal lampshade in place around the bulb. Choose a holder with a ring if you are using a shade, and skip it for a bare bulb.

Can I use LED bulbs in a Bakelite lamp holder?

Yes. E27 and E14 LED bulbs fit the matching holders and draw far less power than older bulbs, so they stay well within the holder's rating. Use a dimmable LED bulb and a compatible dimmer if you want to dim the light.

Can I fit a Bakelite lamp holder myself?

A like-for-like swap is a common DIY job, but it involves mains wiring. Isolate the circuit at the consumer unit first. If the fitting is hard-wired, you are unsure of the wiring, or the fitting needs an earth, use a qualified electrician.

How quickly will my order arrive, and can I return it?

We estimate 1 to 3 days for UK orders. Standard UK delivery is free on orders over £30, and next day delivery is £4.69 if you order by 1pm. You can return unused items within 30 days.

Ready to build your pendant? Pick your holder, add a cable and bulb, and we will have it with you in 1 to 3 days across the UK.
